  • Helen Zelezny-Scholz (1882-1974) Sculptress Models Novel Desert Dwellings, COMMISSIONED by a wealthy merchant of Tunis, Africa, to design an unusual house, a Czecho-Slovakian sculptress responded by incorporating giant facsimiles of the features of household members in the exterior of the dwelling. The merchant has two daughters, a son-in-law and a grandson, all of whom are shown in mammoth relief in the lines of the unusual structure. The eyes and mouths of the huge figures serve as doors and windows”. This is the original terra cotta machete (small SAMPLE size of original sculpture) for commissioners approval to proceed with full size sculptures. The unusual design was conceived by a Czecho-Slovakian artist, Mrs. Helen Zelezny directly for this Modern Desert Dwelling in Tunis, Africa. She was a Czechoslovakia born artist who spent most of her career working as an artist in Italy.  She was well regarded as a sculptor.  Many of her works are incorporated into architecture.  The item for sale is a figural group featuring three shrouded adults in a pyramidal configuration with a baby held by the central figure. Zelezny-Scholz was able to create detailed and expressive facial features with this material.  Purchased  Alderfer Auction in Hatfield, PA.  The auction description states that the item estate of former student and assistant of Zelezny-Scholz who received the sculpture from the studio upon the death of Zelezny-Scholz.
