  • Lu Duble by ARKO at Archipenko School in Woodstock NY, 1929-39. Rare glazed ceramic sculpture, known as "Supplication", at other times also as "Beatitude" and lastly as "The Choir” all while in New York, #7 of 78 created in August of 1929, Arko stamp, original paper label, 13" x 9". One of the rarest and most important sculptures emanating from the ARKO ceramic school established by Alexander Archipenko in Woodstock, New York, this stylized group of praying figures was created by Lu Duble. Archipenko studied in Kiev and Paris and established an art school in Berlin, and after immigrating to America in 1923, he continued to be an in fatigable teacher and entrepreneur, establishing schools in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, and lived and taught in US through his death in 1964. Lu Duble was perhaps his most prominent student at ARKO, and her work was exhibited in Pittsburgh in 1929, along with the work of other ARKO students. Also known and shown at various exhibitions and museums under the several titles a noted above. Lu Duble, a sculptor and teacher, who, won awards for her expressionist, stylized art, died Thursday in Woodstock, N. Y., where she had a summer home. She was 74 years old and lived at 17 East Ninth Street. Miss Duble, the former Lu Cinda Davies, had been first married to the late Jesse Clyde Duble and then to the late Alfred Geiffert Jr., a noted land scape architect. She was born in Oxford, England, and was brought to the United States in 1903. She studied at the Art Student League, Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design and with Alexander Archipenko, Jose de Creeft and Hans Hofmann. She also studied Haitian and Mayan culture as an aid to creative sculpture and some of her work was influenced by such art. She held a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1937-38 and a Fellowship of the Institute of International Education from 1942 to 1944. Miss Duble's work is represented in the collections of the Newark Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
