  • Whitey Ford (1928–2020), famously nicknamed “The Chairman of the Board,” was one of the greatest pitchers in New York Yankees history. The left-hander spent his entire 16-season Major League career with the Yankees, becoming the ace of a dynasty that dominated baseball throughout the 1950s and early 1960s.An eight-time All-Star, Ford won the 1961 Cy Young Award after going 25–4 and also earned World Series MVP honors that season. He appeared in 11 World Series and helped the Yankees win six championships, establishing numerous postseason pitching records. Ford once pitched 33? consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play, breaking Babe Ruth’s longstanding record.Ford finished his career with a remarkable 236–106 record, 2.75 ERA, and 1,956 strikeouts, while his .690 winning percentage ranks among the finest for a modern starting pitcher. His 236 victories remain the most in Yankees franchise history. The Yankees retired his No. 16, and Ford was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, cementing his legacy as one of baseball’s premier left-handed pitchers.
