  • Frank Howard (1936–2023), famously nicknamed “Hondo” and “The Capital Punisher,” was one of Major League Baseball’s most imposing power hitters of the 1960s and early 1970s. Standing 6-foot-7, Howard was a physically dominant outfielder and first baseman best remembered for his years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Senators.Howard was named National League Rookie of the Year in 1960 with the Dodgers after hitting 23 home runs and driving in 77 runs. He helped Los Angeles capture the 1963 World Series championship, hitting a home run during the Dodgers’ four-game sweep of the New York Yankees.Howard became a superstar after joining Washington, developing into one of the American League’s most feared sluggers. A four-time All-Star, he led the American League in home runs in 1968 and 1970 and topped the league in RBIs in 1970. During an extraordinary six-game stretch in May 1968, Howard blasted 10 home runs, demonstrating the tremendous power that made him a favorite among Senators fans.Over his 16-season Major League career, Howard accumulated 382 home runs, 1,119 RBIs, and 1,774 hits. His towering home runs and larger-than-life presence made “Hondo” one of the defining power hitters in Washington baseball history.
